The Word of God as bread, seed, sword and water

Exodus 16:4: Then said the LORD unto Moses, Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a certain rate every day, that I may prove them, whether they will walk in my law, or no.

Jesus told the people that Moses did not give their ancestors bread from heaven but this father in heaven. He added that he is the true bread sent from heaven (John 6:31-35).

In the bible the analogy of bread is used to describe the word of God, among other symbols, like the seed, sword and water.

Bread

As bread, the word of God is spiritual food. Talking about the word as food, the word is also described as milk (1Peter 2:2) and meat in the bible (Hebrews 5:11-14).

It is taken for granted that spiritual growth and strength cannot be gained without the word. You can occupy yourself with various activities but until you occupy yourself with the word, everything means nothing. Peter wrote that we should grow in knowledge and grow in grace (2Peter 3:18); and both are manifested by the word.

The word of God is called the word of His grace (Acts 14:3, 20:22). Paul wrote in a place that we should let our words be seasoned with salt, ministering grace to the hearers (Ephesians 4:29). Also the knowledge that Peter is talking about is the knowledge of the truth (Jesus is the truth) and the bible says that the word of God is truth.

Moreover, the bible says that the law came through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ (John 1:17); both corresponding to the two-fold growth that is mentioned by Peter.

We need to meditate on the word, (which is the “digestive process”). This is a process which takes place in the mind. Psalm one says that it is the one who meditates day and night on the word of God that will flourish like a tree planted by the river of waters.

To Joshua, God said, for him to experience success, he needs to meditate on the word of God. He said to him: this book of the law shall not depart from your mouth but you shall mediate on it day and night that you may prosper, to grow into the full success I have for you (Joshua 1:8).

Seed

The word is the seed of transformation. The bible says the (spiritual) sower sows the word of God (Mark 4:1-9). The word as seed needs a ready heart to receive and incubate it so that it can bear fruit. It is the word as seed that gets people born again, not the word as bread.

That is why to be born again you don’t need so many bible verses, but to grow spiritually you do. The evangelist does not need to quote a lot of bible verses to minister salvation, but a teacher of the word who is interested in the spiritual growth of the people must be copious with scriptures, except you are just an exhorter (Romans 12:7-8 [an evangelist and a prophet are exhorters]).

Through consistent growth the people can grow from the elementary principle of Christ, from the milk of the word, to the meat of the word, so that they may quickly move from being babes to being teachers themselves.

Peter said that we are born again by the seed of the word of God, not a corruptible seed (1Peter 1:23, 1John 3:9).

Sword

The word of God is called the sword of the spirit. It has penetrating force in the spirit realm. The book of Hebrews says that the word of God is sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the asunder of soul and spirit, even to the bone and the marrow (Hebrews 4:12-13).

As a sword of the spirit, the word of God channels the power of God. That was the tool that Jesus used in the wilderness while confronting the devil’s temptations (Matthew 4:1-11). (The warfare of the spirit also includes). Rather than bend to the temptation of the devil, and feel helpless when he comes at you roaring like a lion (1Peter 5:8), use the sword of the spirit, the word of God.

When you sense the work of the devil, don’t complain, or feel overwhelmed, you should direct the word of God to counteract whatever he brings or is attempting to bring your way. When the devil is presenting his plans and thought, counteract them by presenting the plans and thoughts of God, in his word.

The word of God comes with the force of God. They are not empty words. Jesus says his words are spirit and life (John 6:63). When the devil speaks, it is death (Hebrews 2:14), but we should not be silent, we should release the word of God in our mouths. When you feel certain symptoms in your body, say: my body is the temple of the Holy Spirit (1Corinthians 6:19), or by the stripes of Jesus I am healed (1Peter 2:24).

Water

The word of God as water has cleansing power. Paul said that what this means for the church is that Christ through the washing of water by the word rids the church if wrinkles and spots, presenting to himself a glorious church (Ephesians 5:25-27).

The word of God has the mission to make us like Christ, the Word of God (John 1:1-2). The more the word of God is applied to our lives, the more of the life of Christ we display, because the more the works of the flesh gets washed away.

Certain disciples were called Christians in Antioch, but this was not until the preaching of the word had gone on for some time in that place. And that is the name that is generally acceptable to refer to followers of Jesus (Acts 22-26).

Without the word doing his work in us, there is no way that our life can reflect the righteousness of Jesus. The word of God is called the word of righteousness (Hebrews 5:13). It is the word that when it comes to you have the power to cause you to do the right things.

The word as water can cleanse us from wrong habits. I am not saying that it is not good for you to go for counseling. But you should at least have taken the time to review the stand of the word of God in that area of your challenge.
