1Samuel 22:13: And Saul said to him, “Why have you conspired against me, you and the son of Jesse, in that you have given him bread and a sword and have inquired of God for him, so that he has risen against me, to lie in wait, as at this day?”
The word of God has both a growth and combative utilities, as both bread (Luke 4:4) and sword (Ephesians 6:17) respectively. You take in the word as bread, for strength, for energy, and we apply word as sword, for battle, for spiritual confrontation against the devil.
If a situation is contrary to the word of God, you have to take the word of God and get to battle to see things conform to the word around us. But to have things within us conform to the word of God, we would need the bread word, to infuse us with spiritual understanding and spiritual strength.
Reading the bible gives food to the soul, while praying with the word releases the spiritual sword to cause things to line up with God’s word around us. It follows with how the book of Hebrews described the word. It said it is sharper than any two-edged sword (Hebrews 4:12). That means the word is the tool of domination.
In the Garden of Eden, God gave Adam and Eve dominion on the earth (Genesis 1:26-28, 2:17, Genesis 3), the word of God was to be their means of dominating on the earth, against demonic infestation. God has said to them: be fruitful, multiply and have dominion on the added. God also said that they should not eat the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, with the punishment of death attached to the word of God. They were supposed to live by the word.
They were supposed to dominate the earth. But they dropped the truth to the floor and allowed the devil dominate them through his lies. They were supposed to fight with the word of God, standing in full trust in God, but they chose to embrace lies and therefore lost out totally.
They dropped the shield of faith to the floor, and the devil hit them came with his sword of lies it hit them and they died spiritually because they disobeyed God.
Faith is built up through the word of God; therefore the shield of faith is the word of God applied to quenching the fiery darts of the devil, based on the analysis of Apostle Paul (Ephesians 6:10-18). Jesus used the word as a shield in his response to the fiery dart of the three temptations of the devil while in the wilderness (Luke 4:1-13).
The shield of faith should be used to deal with the onslaught of the devil. But Adam and Eve did not see the devil’s sword of lies coming, so they did not put up a resistance. They were deceived when the devil caused Eve to see the word of God as a lie. We get to trust God’s word and let that be our shield as we lay hold of his promises and proclaim it.
Paul told Timothy to war a good warfare through the words spoken over him, prophetic words (1Timothy 1:18), use the sword word. Timothy needed to focus on the application of the word of God which was to get him to into the fullness of the plans and purpose of God for his life, against the desire of Satan and his cohorts who wants nothing more than to have him buried in irrelevances and struggling without end.
The word Timothy was supposed to use will put the devil where he belongs: firmly under his feet, while he rides in the high places that God has for him (Habakkuk 3:19).
Faith is everything
Since the word of God is intimately related to faith (faith is a fruit of the word [Romans 10:17]) and we see it manifest both as bread and sword in the bible, which means that it takes faith to grow spiritually and to also win in the battles of life.
Many people readily identifies faith as needed in the process of confronting the devil and his hoards, especially because it is a spiritual process and deals with something unseen, but spiritual growth is a spiritual process too and it dealing with the unseen and is also tied to faith.
Jesus gave some parables of the kingdom of God. He used the symbolism of a seed sown, which grows through an unseen process in some of those parables. In short the farmer operates by faith expecting that the seed sown will produce in multiplied folds, which is growth.
The Lord has given us a measure of faith (in seed form, coming with the word of faith we heard to be saved [Romans 10:6-17]) at the point of being born again, and like in the parable of the talents (Matthew 25:15-28), when we use that measure of faith, our growth is guaranteed.
You faith is linked to grace (Romans 12:3-6), and spiritual growth is measured by Peter in two ways: increase in grace and increase in knowledge (2Peter 3:18), which corresponds with what John the apostle said that Jesus brought. He wrote that the law came through Moses but grace and truth (true knowledge) came through the Lord Jesus Christ (John 1:17). So when we grow in our grace and knowledge. But that is not just mere awareness of facts; it is the knowledge of the truth, which is a person. We would thereby grow into the measure of the fullness of the statute of Christ (Ephesians 4:9-16). We are born again through Jesus Christ and we are meant to growth into him, fully representing him on the earth.
The measure of faith we have manifests in grace and overtime that grace multiplies. If you have grace to pray for five minutes a day, and you are faithful in it, it will grow. Note that the word “faithful”, means the consistent application of the faith that you have.
If your level of grace is to read two verses of the bible a day, be faithful in it, and you will soon see yourself grow in your hunger for the word of God, you will grow in your capacity to understand truth. When you are consistent with your five-minutes-a-day prayer, it will grow in grace to pray more.
When it comes to spiritual battle, it takes faith to be sensitive to the Holy Spirit. Note that the word of God defines faith as the evidence on things not seen. It is acting based on the reality of the unseen.
The forces of darkness are unseen yet real, and by the Holy Spirit we are able to stand on top, against the wiles of the enemy. When you respond to the prompting of the Holy Spirit to deal in a specific way with the operations of the devil, you grow in that grace.
The word of God in this piece has been associated with bread for spiritual growth, with sword for spiritual domination, and with shield for spiritual protection. And the three were linked to faith which is the generator for grace and when we apply the grace we have in any area we would experience growth in maturity, in domination and in the shield of faith, so much that others can be covered with our shield.
