Consulting mediums and spiritists

eye-catcher-74182_640Isaiah 8:19: And when they say to you, “Inquire of the mediums and the necromancers who chirp and mutter,” should not a people inquire of their God? Should they inquire of the dead on behalf of the living?

As Christians we should have nothing to do with the evil works of darkness in the name of making enquiry. To submit to another spirit apart from the Holy Spirit to find out about the future is a sure gateway to spiritual pollution.

Paul asked: what concord does the temple of God have with Satan (2Corinthians 6:14-18)? And we are the temple of God (1Corinthians 3:16). Consulting fortune-teller, divination priests, someone who mixes Christianity with other religion, someone who claims to be Christ; or through means like palm reading, tarot card reading; there is also horoscope, astrology or other means of knowing the spiritual by some form of esoteric knowledge, are all satanic ploys to bring us into bondage. These are satanic mediums.

It is not some harmless pastime or something to kill boredom. It is the worship of Satan and the devil himself masquerading as an angel of light (2Corinthians 11:4). Light means direction, guidance, it means help; and the devil can come in these ways to lead people into bondage.

Contacting other sources that the word of God is against is a reflection of lack of trust in God. And it is the penchant of some people with appetite for the esoteric, for the spectacular, who are not willing to sit down and put their nose in the word of God to seek God for themselves, only willing to walk by sight, what is felt, what is told them, and not by faith.

The bible warns against such spiritual contact with demons, we are to be separated to God, have our thoughts full of him, wait on him, rely on him, having a developing relationship with him.

The focus verse is about bringing up a case for rejecting alternatives to God to know the unknown. Rather than take the wrong route why not seek to take the God at his word. And if he does not immediately show you what you want, you should not seek for an alternative, but continue trusting that God has the best mind for you. And believe that the Holy Spirit will lead you (Romans 8:14). You need to have faith that God will guide you. And you express that dependence on God through prayer. David prayed: for your name sake lead me and guide him (Psalm 31:3). And he was a poster boy for the benefits of seeking direction from God.

When going for battle it was his habit to seek direction from God and he had victory after victory because his heart was right, his focus was right (2Samuel 5:17-25). He was separated to God and sort direction from him alone.

This contrasted with what King Saul did. When God gave him direction he did not follow it, so God blacklisted him and disregarded him when he asked him for direction. Eventuality he resorted to a necromancer, someone through satanic spirits claims to be able to communicate with the dead to connect with Prophet Samuel (1Samuel 28). (When he rejected the light of the instruction of God he was plunged into darkness.) That was a final nail to his coffin.

That practice was not tolerable to God, as he laid it out in the law how no witch should be allowed to live (Exodus 22:18), and that such evil demonic practices of the surrounding nations must be avoided by all means, including seeking spiritists and mediums (Leviticus 19:31, 20:6-7, Deuteronomy 18:10-17).

He wants to be the only influence in the lives of his people and He has not changed his mind. The devil coming to the Garden of Eden and giving Adam and Eve a counter-guidance which they received was the road to the abyss and that has not changed.

We should have nothing to do with what is fetish. We should not be afraid of things like that being used against us. The bible says: no weapon formed against us shall prosper and every tongue that rises up against us in judgment we shall condemn (Isaiah 54:17), asking: who shall harm us when we are preoccupied with good? (1Peter 3:13). We have the authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and overcome all the powers of the enemy, and nothing by any means harms us (Luke 10:19).

So since we are above the power of the enemy, we should then not submit to it seeking for direction. What fellowship does light have with darkness?

We bring curses upon ourselves when we open ourselves to the operation of demons. Paul said such interactions are not innocent, saying we should not have fellowship with demons (1Corinthians 10:18-23). Since demons are spirits, to interact with them also means we become spiritually entangled. And while blessings come from the Spirit of God, curses comes from the other kinds of spirits, the demonic spirits.

We are supposed to reject their work and speak against it, trampling upon them, exposing the deception behind their operation. We should have nothing to do with the unfruitful works of darkness (Ephesians 5:8-14). We should not be accomplices by patronising them but shine light on them, dispelling them.

We should rather actively seek God and pursue his knowledge above all else, so that we can advance in them. Paul told Timothy to take the word of God seriously so that he can advance in them (1Timothy 4:12-16). If you are not actively advancing in the light, you might get swallowed up in the darkness.

Jesus said when a demon is casted from a man he goes to the dry places and not finding a place to rest comes back to check the place where he left. And finding it clean and unoccupied he goes back to call seven other demons more wicked than him and the latter state of the man becomes worse that former. Why, because the man did not seek to be filled with God after being emptied of the devil. It is not enough to be free from Satan, how about being attached to God (Matthew 12:43-45)?

Moses, who advanced in his walk with God, yielding to him, manifested the supernatural in a greater measure than the sorcerers of Pharaoh manifested the devil (Exodus 7-11). That is the example we should follow. When Moses did the first three signs: turning water to blood, turning staff into snake and multiplying frogs on the land, they did something similar. But Moses went on to display 7 more signs that the demons working in the resident sorcerers of the courts of Pharaoh were not able to reproduce.

This shows that doing signs and wonders does not mean we are of God, Pharaoh’s sorcerers did some. Jesus says: “by their fruits we shall know them” not by their signs and working of miracles (Matthew 7:15-20). The devil is described as one who can manifest lying wonders. In the land of Samaria before Philip the evangelist went there to preach Christ, there was Simon the sorcerer who “whaoed” he people with his sorcery, the wonders he performed (Acts 8). Everyone was under the spell of the man, and he gained power over them by sorcery. That is the aim of the devil: to dominate, to deceive. But the power of God through Philips drowned the resident sorcerer out.

On a missionary journey Paul he expressed the superior power of God in the palace of a ruler. When a sorcerer, was made moves to resist the coming of the word of God into the heart of the ruler, Paul said he would be blind for a season and immediately a mist covered his eyes and he had to be guided out and the heart of the ruler was won for Christ. That was a power display and the devil had to bow (Acts 13:4-12).

Because someone can give information about you supernatural does not means he is truly from God, because the young girl was telling things about Paul and his team that were true. Paul casted out a demon from her. She was possessed with a spirit of divination (Acts 16:16-19). And she had made a lot of money for his minders (another evidence that this is not from God). But Paul casted the python spirit from her, expressing the power of God over that expression of the spirit of python. That is the same call you have, to dominate in the name of Jesus and not be dominated.
