Perpetual anointing

We have an anointing from Jesus, which makes us priests just like him. All believers are like this because we have the Holy Spirit and no one can be Christ’s without having the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:13), whose manifestation is described as an unction, which the oil in the Old Testament is symbolic of.

The priesthood of every believer was the major truth that was restored by the ministry of Martin Luther, a few hundred years ago. The holy oil of the Spirit does not mark just a select few as in the Old Testament, but the generality of the believers.

We all have the right to approach the presence of God, but in the Old Testament only one person, the High Priest can do that, going to the holy of holies in the temple. But we have been anointed with the same anointing as Jesus, we are his body, share in his priesthood.

The problem prior to the time of Luther was about the people retreating back to the Old Testament order of things where certain tribes were the priest and Levites, having special right to presence of God, and service to perform there, and everyone else was excluded. A few can speak for God and teach people the law, and its interpretation, even if it is erroneous. The bible was locked away from the common man, truth was locked away.

But Luther experienced an eureka moment, when as a priest, he discovered that the just shall live by individual faith in Jesus, and not by some ritual taught by a church somewhere.

Each one needed to find the truth by themselves. No church can do that for you. There is no collective salvation. You have to make up your mind. Each has to appreciate and appropriate truth of salvation for themselves. Salvation is individual and confers a permanent right as a son of God (John 1:12).

We can come to God on our own; even in our bedroom not needing any structured ritual of a church, or coming to a build where the people are dressed funny and chairs are made in a certain way, the people dressed in a funny way are saying things from certain books, using certain tones using ancient words, repeating the same words again and again.

That kind of environment breeds lazy Christianity. Those who sit in the pews feel no responsibility to seek the truth for themselves, make personally changes, embrace truth and life and be individual disciples of Jesus.

We need to realise that Jesus is not an exotic doctrine or a faraway person, but someone that can be known spiritual and loved intensely right now.

The religious structure prior to the time of Luther is similar to the one at the time of Jesus, where the very way things that are done in the name of God only makes people move farther away from God.

Jesus said that the Pharisees go to the ends of the earth to make disciples and make them twice a child of hell as they are. They are blind leaders of the blind. There is no need to have Mary, Joseph or anyone who claims to have some super-spiritual edge to be our go between to God.

Those religions who set up that structure have jettisoned the truth and fallen from grace. Because until we recognise Jesus for who he is in our individual lives as the only mediator between God and man (1Timothy 2:5) we have not found truth. It does not matter if millions of people do the wrong thing, it does not make it right (Exodus 23:2).

While there is a deficiency in our body because it can die (the same limitation that Jesus shared when he condescend to our state and chose to die the ignoble death on the cross) and there is deficiency in the soul and we are told that we need to renew our minds (Romans 12:1-2), there is no inherent deficiency in the Spirit’s anointing.

A priest is born into a specific family, but the point comes for the confirmation of the call at a certain age, which is thirty.

Similarly, Jesus, at the age of thirty received the anointing of the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove coming from the father in heaven (Matthew 3:16).

That was his commissioning to the work of his father full time. And when he ascended to heaven, he sent his people the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:1-4). Jesus was commissioned by the Holy Spirit in a perpetual anointing and he poured out the Spirit on them as their own commissioning.

Jesus said to us: you shall receive power after the Holy Spirit has come upon you and you shall be my witnesses in Judea, Samaria and the uttermost part of the world (Acts 1:8). The call of the church to go into the world is a perpetual call, backed with a perpetual anointing of the Holy Spirit, for powerful result. Jesus said that he who believed and is baptised shall be saved and that is a perpetual order in this season of grace (Romans 6:14), which is not just a message, it is the way, truth and life (John 14:6).

While Peter was giving the meaning of the experience of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit in the second chapter of the book of Acts, he said it was a fulfilment of the word of God by the prophet Joel which says in the last days I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh, your sons and daughters will prophecy, and old men will dream dreams. In other words: the experience of the invasion of the Spirit is a perpetual reality in the life of the believer.

That is why once you have been renewed by Spirit (Titus 3:5), it is perpetual, and when we received the baptism on the Holy Spirit, it is in perpetuity (Acts 19:1-18). The Holy Spirit comes with gifts, power and wisdom which are yours in perpetuity, since the gifts and calling of God are without repentance. Jesus said that the Holy Spirit is as permanent resident, not just as a visitor.
