Becoming who God is

1Chronicles 2:43: The sons of Hebron: Korah, Tappuah, Rekem and Shema. (ESV)

His genetic makeup is the Holy Spirit; the bible says God is Spirit (John 4:24).

His genetic makeup is love; the bible says God is love (1John 4:8).

His genetic makeup is light; the bible says God is light (1John 1:5).

God is Spirit

The Spirit is unseen influence. Since we share the same Spirit with God, we are subject to his influence and we can influence him in return through prayer.

The book of Hebrews said we need to be subject to the Father of spirits to live (Hebrews 12:9).

The Spirit stands for the life of God in us (Romans 8:1-2), for the fact that we are God’s property (Ephesians 1:13). Paul wrote that we have been sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise. He is the stamp of our divine ownership.

Sharing God’s spiritual essence means that we are able to exert spiritual influence. We do that in the place of prayer. When we take the step of faith to pray, we are activating our spiritual dimension to connect with God through the name of Jesus, as enhanced by the Holy Spirit. In that way, we cooperated with God’s creative essence.

Since we share his spiritual essence we are spiritual empowered by him. As Christians we are alive in the spirit (Ephesians 2:1), we are the body of Christ (Ephesians 1:22-23) and operate in this world as he would (1John 4:17). We are first class citizens of his kingdom, and the angels who are also made spirits are our servants (Hebrews 1:13-14). They are ministering spirits send forth to minister to those who will be heirs of salvation- us.

Salvation is made real to us by the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:16). The presence of the Spirit in us, gives us the sense of the immediacy of heaven, of God to us.

We have a sense of the nearness of God. Peter said to those he preached to that they should believe in Jesus so that they will experience times of refreshing from the presence of God (Acts 3:19). And the Holy Spirit is the conveyor of the presence of God.

David said to God: where will I go from your Spirit, you are everywhere (Psalm 139:7-12). The element that explains that is the wind. The presence of God can be pervasive and immersive, just as the wind. In connection to God we also get to be unlimited in potential especially as we pray. Prayer is taught in the bible as the gateway to the realm of the spirit (Ephesians 6:18), as our influence gate (Luke 18:1-8).

Elijah achieved the extraordinary in the place of prayer (James 5:16-18). As one man, he held a whole nation to ransom because his prayer efforts stopped rain from falling in Israel for more than three years. He stood before evil king Ahab saying: it shall rain again unless I said so (1Kings 17:1).

He wielded so much power because he prayed fervently. And it is written: the effectual fervent prayer of the righteous man makes tremendous spiritual power available.

There is mental power, there is also physical power, but spiritual power is the greatest because it affects the unseen realm which we do not see, and it is what happens in the unseen that affects the seen (Hebrews 11:3).

God is love

The world had lost the meaning of love until the coming of Jesus. The world wrongly defines love as emotion, or something sexual.

After the fall of man, God said the imagination of man’s heart are evil continually (Genesis 6:5), and it is those hearts that should where love is located.

Love is first and foremost towards God. When that horizontal love is compromised, the horizontal dimension of love is compromised, and the vertical dimension (which is love between humans) becomes compromised goes sore. The loss of vertical love is manifested in nations rising up against nations (Luke 21:10).

The heart of man is desperately wicked who can know it, Jeremiah wrote (Jeremiah 17:9). The compromised heart of man is not a place where love dwells. So the salvation act of Jesus also included having the genuine love of God put inside man (Romans 5:5). The blood of Jesus purges our heart from dead works and the Holy Spirit shed abroad the love of God in our heart. With that, the restoration of sonship is complete.

When the heart is changed then the life is changed. God said that in the new covenant in Jesus he was going to replace our heart of stone with hearts of flesh (Ezekiel ), a heart amenable to the Spirit of God, whose main fruit expression is love (Galatians 5:22-23).

God is light

God as Spirit shows his influence, God as love shows his motivation, while God as light shows his impact. And just as we are sons of God, made in his image, these should define our life.

Jesus said that we are the light of the world, we are salt of the earth (Matthew 5:13). We are the only source of lasting positive spiritual impact on the earth.

A psalmist wrote, have respect to the covenant for the dark places of the earth are full of the habitation of wickedness (Psalm 74:20). And light is the answer to darkness.

When God began his creation work in the first verse of the bible, the bible says that darkness was upon the face of the deep, God’s solution to darkness was not to argue with it but to declare: let there be light.

Light is a symbol of change, it creates the atmosphere for all other creative work to take place. We need to be equipped with truth, which is the light of God shining upon our soul. To the limit that darkness is dispelled from the heart then all other operations of God can begin. And we are that light, our presence is the gateway, the channel for God to create his change on the earth, to again make of the earth a Garden of Eden, bustling with the life of God.

The power and purpose of God are revealed by the coming of the light. Jesus was described as a great light to deliver those who have been in darkness (Matthew 4:16), and you are a son of God in his order.
