The ultimate aim is to know God. It is the ultimate pursuit. If you are going to expend your energy it should for this cause, if you are going to spend your time it should be to be close to God.
God has promised that we will seek him and find him if we seek him with all our heart (Deuteronomy 4:29). It is a divine guarantee. The children of Levi had no inheritance. God was their inheritance and they did not feel short-changed (Numbers 18:20).
There is no higher pursuit, and none more rewarding. And we are able to know him by the Holy Spirit. Paul said that we have received the Holy Spirit that we may access the mind of God that we may know him (1Corinthians 2).
Life is a training place to learn the ways of God. There will not be a time that there is nothing more to discover about God.
Even at the end of the three and half year period when Jesus taught the disciple many things, there were still many more things for them to know (John 16:12-13).
God is not static, he is in motion. The bible says “can two walk together when they agree (Amos 3:3),” when talking about our relationship with God. That means God is in motion.
Paul talked about the manifold wisdom of God (Ephesians 3:10). There are many sides to his wisdom, those who Paul referred to as heaping to themselves teachers (2Timothy 4:1-4), who will tickle their fancy most probably lighted upon a wisdom of God they are comfortable with, and they decided that they have no use for other sides of the manifold wisdom. So they are no interested in a journey of discovering God. They have God in their own image, based on their parochial construct. And seeking God became predictable, tending towards boring.
As he interacts with us, we interact with him via his commandments, through our obedience and worship or as the case may be, our disobedience.
He interacts with us also by his grace, and we interact with him by our acts of service to others and what we do to others we indirectly do to him (Matthew 25:32-46).
The earth is a giant ball of interaction between humanity and divinity. God set the order of the earth saying, seed time and harvest will not cease. He sets the system and we work it.
Worship (which was mentioned above) is another way we respond to God. The bible says that those who worship God, shall worship him in spirit and truth (John 4:24); that means they connect to him through his Spirit and truth, on his own terms. We access him through those two paths. They are means by which we connect with the Lord and creator.
The God revealed in the pages of the bible is a person, distinct (not amenable to personal reconstruction) and it has been designed in such a way that the primary gateway for knowing God is the scriptures (John 5:39), which was referred to as the oracles of God (Romans 3:2).
It is not enough to approach the search for God from an academic standpoint. We will not find him through that. It is not enough to just mouth commitment to seeking God, we must do it with all the vigour we can summon, with all the passion within us, making God the primary focus of our love.
Jesus admonished us to love the Lord our God with all our heart, soul and might (Matthew 22:37). There is no other alternative. Jesus rebuked some Christians saying, they have left their first love, calling them to repent (Revelation 2:4-5). He called them to repent because there is no alternative to loving God for our lives to be shaped aright.
Jesus warned against those who will come after him and will say they are the Christ, they are Messiah; that they have come with truth about God (Luke 21:8). He said we should not believe them, because they are part of Satan’s grand plan to deceive and derail us in our search for God.
Deception comes in many shades different people are susceptible to different efforts of deception, and the devil has his arsenal full of them. But when we realise that there is no other God apart from the father of the lord Jesus Christ we are on the right track, away from deception trap.
When we are open to the right Spirit will not be subjected to the wrong one. Jesus said that if we who are evil know how to give good gifts to our children, how much more will the heavenly father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him (Luke 11:13)?
The Holy Spirit makes it possible for us to know God because God is Spirit and those who worship him will do so in spirit and truth, as noted earlier.
That God is Spirit really cancels out the possibility of connecting to him through any means apart from spiritual means. Jesus helped a woman to move away from the limitation of the former models of seeking God which were about going to a certain mountain or temple. That limits people (who may be far from the mountain or who by right cannot enter the temple, maybe by the accident of birth) from connecting with God.
In the new model of Spirit and truth, connecting with God is personal, individual and with no limit of time and space. The gate is now opened for any and everyone to know God, to be close to him. It is now self-determined.
We need to have the building block of God’s truth in us. The more we know him the deeper our relationship with him becomes. I cannot relate with you more than I know you, know the truth about you, and when it comes to God, we are given capacity to know him as we share his Spirit, which is the foundation and truth becomes the building block for it. That makes it possible for us to know the one, the God, who said there is no other apart from him.
