The truth of Christ

The truth of Christ based on this verse is not just something in a book, but an animating essence. For the truth of God to be in us, we have to open ourselves to it. And it is something we experience one stage after the other. We grow in it.

That is why we need to expose ourselves to the truth of God. We are changed to the extent that we take in the word of God. James said that we should take in the engrafted word of God which is able to save our soul (James 1:21).

Paul wrote that we should not conform to this world but be transformed by the renewing of our mind (Romans 12:1-2). To renew the mind means to reshape the thinking pattern, to remove what is wrong and put what is right.

If we do not know the power of thought, we will not know the importance of the truth. If we believe the wrong thing about Jesus, that means we will have a twisted relationship with him if any at all. If we believe wrong we will live wrong. If you believe that Jesus is Lord, it will affect how we live (Romans 10:9-10). The truth should not just be known but also lived.

Living the truth means we reject lies, it means we are uplifted above the lies of the devil. When Eve allowed the lies of the devil to influence her, she was reduced (Genesis 3). Lies reduces but truth enhances.

When we uphold truth, we are upheld, we see correctly and can go in the right direction. Those who did not embrace Jesus as the truth were called spiritually blind (Matthew 15:14). The truth of God is inner light, inner guide, inner compass, through which we know where we are and know the direction we should go and are enabled to move in that direction. The bible describes the word of God as the mirror, it is a reflection of who we are or who we should be.

The truth we need to be built in is the truth about Christ. Before meeting Jesus, Paul knew a lot of things, but the fact that he did not know Jesus meant he was empty of “the” Truth. It was when Jesus found him that he found himself because the truth about Christ is also the truth about ourselves.

The truth about the reason for his death shows how much we are beholden to him, how great his grace to us, how he is beautiful for all situation. Without the truth that Jesus is the baptizer with the Holy Spirit, we would not release our faith to embrace what he has to offer in the operation of the power of the Holy Spirit in us (Luke 3:16).

When we see Jesus as our righteousness (2Corinthians 5:21), we would not struggle to live right. We have no righteousness to offer but to allow Christ to flow into us. The bible says that sin shall no longer have dominion over us because we are not under the law but under grace (Romans 6:14). That becomes the reality in our lives as we know the truth grace of God, knowing it in truth (Colossians 1:6).

We should live by the truth of God, learn the truth and seek the truth

To live by truth means we obey the word, we allow the word to define the shape of our lives, the shape of our relationships. That is when we allow the word of God to be the light on our path. When we are fixed on the word, it gains control over the way we think, how we approach situations.

Paul said we need to have the word of Christ fill us, and we should speak from its overflow (Colossians 3:16).

We need to have a commitment to the word, and not easily neglect the word because of any pressure to do otherwise or the pressures/persecution that comes because of the word.

In a parable about the effect of the word on different heart types, how it brings forth fruits, the bible says that the seed of the word can fall on the heart of thorns, or on stony foundation or by the wayside (Mark 4:1-20).

These are about the things that negatively affects the seed of the word from fully bearing its fruits in our lives.

The word by the wayside is about satanic opposition to the word having an effect. That means we need spiritual warfare to ensure the effectiveness of the word in our lives or in the lives of the people we are ministering to.

A lack of understanding means the stony heart, which means the effort should be made to understand. We will not understand if we are occupied with some others things, if the word is not our number one priority, the word if retained only for a brief period because of the stony condition of the heart.

And there is the thorny heart. Here, the things come up because of the word. There is persecution, cares/pressures of this world, love of the world, choke the word and it does not bring forth fruit.

The successful heart is the one who overcomes the three levels of opposition to the word, to become fruitful, to living the word.

We need to be aggressive when it comes to learning the truth. The book of proverbs says: buy the truth and sell it not (Proverbs 23:23). The man talked about in the first book of psalms was aggressive about the word. He meditates on it day and night.

Paul told Timothy: study to show yourself approved to God as a workman who needs not be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth (2Timothy 2:15). To learn, we expose ourselves to the word, we read the bible, we read Christian uplifting books. We set out to compare scriptures with scriptures, making sure that we are further established in the truth that we know.

When you do not speak the truth then you have set yourself to be in the camp of the devil, who is the father of lies. Peter was held in the throes of regret after he denied Jesus three times (Matthew 26:75). Paul enjoined us to speak the truth one to another as members of the body of Christ (Ephesians 4:25). We should be true one to another. Knowing the importance of speaking the truth, David prayed:  let the word of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable to you Oh Lord my redeemer (Psalm 19:14).
