We can only relate with God to the limit that we know him, and the whole bible is about a journey into the knowledge of God.
Paul cried: that I may know him (Philippians 3:10). Daniel proclaimed: those who know their God will be strong (Daniel 11:32). Another said that let us know the Lord, let us pursue the knowledge of God (Hosea 6:3).
Know God’s word is almost the same as knowing him because we do get to know people from the words they speak. And how we see someone will determine how we interpret his actions and inactions.
God is light means he stands in contrast to darkness. It means he shows the way, he creates, he is about order and not confusion. He is about clarity.
Paul said that God is not the author of confusion (1Corinthians 14:33). When we know God we know what events we can ascribe to him or not. Jesus said that it is not God who steal, kills or destroy, he said it is the devil (John 10:10).
Paul said that he wants to preach in the land of Thessalonica, but the devil withstood him (1Thessalonians 2:18). He did not say God made it happen. He was not in the dark wondering about the source of the difficulty he faced. He knew it was the devil.
When Paul was experiencing difficulty, he said a messenger of Satan was sent to buffet him, and he prayed to God that he become free from the difficulty (2Corinthians 12:6-10).
He did not say Jesus was the cause, but he prayed to Jesus, who said to him, my grace is sufficient for you, my strength is made perfect in weaknesses. The role of Jesus is as the source of grace. Paul prayed for the Corinthian church that God will make all grace about towards then so that in all things and at all times, they will abound to every good work (2Corinthians 9:8).
That God is light means he reveals. Jesus is called the revelation of the father (Hebrews 1:1-3). He told his disciples if you see me you have seen the father (John 14:7-9). God wants to reveal himself and not hide himself. In the Garden of Eden when he created man, he did not hide his instruction from him.
He let him know the dos and don’ts of the garden. He guided him on the fruits to eat and what not to eat, he manifested his wife to him. He manifested the purpose he was to serve. He was not supposed to be a loafing around in the garden but to tend and keep it.
All these were the manifestation of God as light, as a blessing, and the life and energy source. Just as physical light is the energy source for plants, the light of God is the life of men. Of Jesus, it was said that in him was life and the life was the light of men (John 1:1-5). And of his fullness we receive grace and truth (John 1:12-17).
When God manifests in light it means that darkness has no place, darkness has to give way. The devil seeks to dominate the earth but with God as light, that agenda is truncated, it dies a stillbirth.
We need A. light to know the way to God, we need B. light inside us as the true knowledge of God, and C. we need to be channels for God’s light to shine.
Light of way
Light of way is about divine direction. There is a way that seems right to man, but the end is destruction (Proverbs 14:12). The bible says we will hear a word behind us, saying this is the way walk in it (Isaiah 30:12). The word of God is the light shining on our path. And the path of the righteous is supposed to shine brighter and brighter unto the perfect day (Proverbs 4:18).
We are supposed to walk in increasing intensity of light, moving from glory to glory, from empowerment to empowerment. God wants us to walk in his light, walk in the direction his word points to us, in the way of the Spirit. We need to seek the direction from God, we cannot just presume we know what to do.
Light of knowledge
Paul said that God causes the light of the knowledge of his son to shine through us. He said when it pleases God to reveal his son in him, he did not confer with flesh and blood. He also said that God who causes light to shine out of darkness has caused the light of the knowledge of his son to shine in our heart.
Though we do not see Jesus physically, we see him spiritually with the eyes of our heart. For the church in Ephesus prayer was said that the eyes of their hearts be enlightened (Ephesians 1:15-21). What we know is important, we should be careful how we hear (Luke 8:18), what we hear is what we are exposed to and it shapes our life. And we ought to grow in grace and the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ (2Peter 3:18).
Light of channels
We should be conduits of light, shining in power and wisdom, shining in counsel, shining in our lifestyle.
Jesus said that our lives must be so full of good works that when people see us they will give glory to our father in heaven (Matthew 5:16).
He said we are the light of the world, and we should be conduits of the glory of God in our generation.
Concerning being channels of light, the book of Hebrews said that while the recipients ought to be teachers helping others with the light of the knowledge of Jesus, they still needed to he taught, to be led into truth of the elementary things of Christ, and cannot handle the meat of the word (Hebrews 5:11-14). So it is expected that we should advance towards getting others into the light and not be the ones being on the perceptual receiving end.
