Watch yourselves

If Jesus says watch yourself then it is a serious thing. He wants us to pay special attention to our heart. And the bible says that we should guard our hearts with all diligence because out of it flows the issues of life (Proverbs 4:23).

In the book of Malachi, divorce is linked to the heart going unfaithful, going unhinged from the need for commitment (Malachi 2:14-15).

In the focus verse, Jesus mentioned some things that affects the heart. He said that the heart can be weighed down with addictions, excesses, occupation with sensual pleasures, and being burdened with issues of this life.

We are to cast our burdens on the Lord, with full understanding that he cares for us (1Peter 5:6-7).

Watching yourself includes watching your thoughts (Philippians 4:8), watch what you occupy your time with, the people you associate with because the bible says that bad company corrupts good manners (1Corinthians 15:33).

We need to be aggressive about filling our hearts with the things of God, because of the wicked, we read that God is not in any of his thoughts (Psalm 10:4).

We should not seek independence from God as Adams did (Genesis 3), we need to seek to be more dependent on him, we should not lean on our own understanding but acknowledge him in all our ways (Proverbs 3:5-7).
