John 4:24: God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” (ESV)
Jesus was setting the records straight about who God is. He should know since he came from him. John said: no one has seen God at anytime but the only begotten of the father, who is in the bosom of the father, he has declared him (John 1:18).
The mandate of Jesus when he was on earth was to reveal the father, who sent him to the world. He was to be a bridge builder, connecting us with the reality of who the father is.
The fact that God is Spirit is an unchanging reality, which means, as Jesus noted, that it is those who are spiritually enabled that can connect with him on an individual basis. That spiritual engagement comes through the blood of Jesus which paved the way for the Holy Spirit to come again into man after he became sin-infected (Hebrews 9:14).
Connection with God is primarily through spiritual means, it is not through rituals, or following certain codes. It is about a change that has been effected in us, it is about becoming new creatures (2Corinthians 5:17), not a patching up of the old relic.
It is a new order of being fitted with the equipment of a new spirit through Jesus (John 3:1-8), otherwise, everything else is a joke, because God is Spirit and you can’t change that.
