Eternal means exactly that. It is quality and quantity of life in infinite dimension. That is the perfection with which God originally made man (Genesis 1:26-28).
Quality life is the very life of God, quantity is the unending nature. That second aspect was emphasised by Jesus in the focus verse. He said: they will never perish; no one will snatch them away from my hand.
That means with the eternal life he takes care of internal and external issues. Internal: to free us for from sin so that we will not be subject to judgement and God will be in man; and external: to actively protect us so that we are not at risk of being lost by the scheme or brilliance of any external force. That is your portion.
You are not supposed to fear. The focus verse is part of Jesus’ description of himself as a good shepherd. The only security the sheep has is the commitment of the shepherd and if Jesus is your shepherd, knowing his pedigree, we can be sure of the best of guarantees, of security. Part of the security package is that the sheep hear his voice, follow him, and do not follow a stranger (John 10).
