The schooling of the prophets

I live in Akure, Ondo State, Nigeria, and I suppose that the number of “prophets” per square mile here might be one of the highest in the world.

By their bill board on the streets we know them, by their radio programmes filling the airwaves we know them, by their creative rendering of programme concept we know them, we also know them by the promises they make of what will happen to you when you come to their program.

But two things are common to them: they all trade in fear and they promise to do for you what is already done in Christ. So they feed on the fear and the ignorance of the people.

Why is that so?  Since this piece will only address people with some form of genuine desire to serve God as prophets, I will suggest two reasons why they do what they do: their own search for great spiritual significance AND ignorance.

I will however only focus on the latter in this piece that I title the schooling of the prophets.

So ignorance. That is a big deal of a word. And the law people will tell you that ignorance is not an excuse before the law.

Jesus said the servant (remember I am presuming these people are genuine) who does not know his master’s will and does not do it (in other words ‘is ignorant’), and does something else, will be beaten with few stripes.

But it is better not to be given any stripe at all. Or what do you think? So it is better to not be ignorant than to be ignorant. Right?

So there, Jesus established the fact that some may be genuine servants of God, genuinely gifted but do their service in ignorance. That does not mean they will not get some result.

Didn’t Moses get result before the children of Israel when instead of speaking to the rock, he struck it?  But was he given some stripes by God afterwards or not?

Me I don’t want that kind of stripe that God gave Moses oh. He would only see the promised land and not enter. No be me and you.

I am just giving you a grid on how to think about the various “ignorant” manifestations of the prophetic we have all over Africa.

Apollos was an ignorant though passionate teacher. He processed everything from the grid of the baptism of John in his teaching ministry. His ignorance was not obvious to the average person. Oh some people can be passionate in their ignorance oh!

Apollo was schooled by Priscilla and Aquila and after that, on the strength of that teaching and an expression of uncommon humility, he launched out.

Still retaining that passion which stood him out but with a greater alignment with truth, as aided by that couple, he became an eternal reference point.

The point I am making is that a prophet needs to be schooled in new creation realities (the spirit of religion and the spirit of fear have schooled many) otherwise he will just be seeing visions (hearing things) from his ignorance and people will not be maturing into the fullness of Christ under his ministry, though there might be a lot of demonstrations.

Some find it confusing that the prophet is actually ignorant of truth but the demonstration still flows.

It should not be confusing. One:  the gifts and calling of God are without repentance. Swallow that piece of info for a moment.

And mix that with the fact that God allowed himself to manifest water to the Israelites even when Moses was wrong. The result never made it right as shown by the flogging God gave him later.

One thing I have noticed in the development of prophets is that there is a lot of fear in their background.

The devil possibly does that because he could recognise prophets (and prophetesses) in the making and he knows how very very very dangerous a fully trained prophet is to him and kingdom, so he gets at work ensuring that in their growing up, they are a lot of uncertainties (lack of love); that there is a lot of fear.

This is deliberate to ensure that their prophetic flow is corrupted by fear and not love. If it is corrupted by fear, since fear leads to bondage, they will also lead others into the bondage they are in. But perfect love casts out fear.

So the prophet needs to be schooled to receive the love of the father. They need to be schooled in the finished works of Christ (which communicates the love of father). The true prophetic flow is to communicate the love of the Father through Jesus and nothing else.

The Bible says the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.

A called prophet without being schooled in the things I have mentioned is not allowed (by God, imagine the sword before the tree of life) to enter the realm of the spirit of prophecy.

They can still operate the gift of prophecy, though corrupted by fear. But they will not be able to enter the realm of the spirit of prophecy which is tied to the testimony of Jesus. And the testimony of Jesus cannot be divorced from his finished works on the cross.

But somebody can say that why didn’t God just stop the gift of prophecy until everything was perfect, seeing the great damage an unschooled prophet can cause. But you say that because you do not understand the faithfulness of God. But that is a matter for another time.

Ignorance affected the ultimate effectiveness of Apollos (not his apparent effectiveness) regardless of passion and obvious gifting. That is what we see happening around.

How do I know these things? I absolutely have no idea. And you are free to ignore everything I have written. Thanks.

But before I end this discuss,  I want to talk about a young man, who is emerging into a prophet, who came to our Apostolic Training School.

He graduated from Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, Ondo State, and attended our three-month Apostolic Training School at Jehiel Prayer and Bible Training Institute.

In that place he understood that certain prophetic experiences (including dreams and visions) he was having do not represent the ultimate dimension of revelation, as they feed on fear and they seem to mean things different from what the finished works of Christ testifies. He was helped by God using the school program to enter into a purer flow of the prophetic.

Day 7: 21 days to better relationships

Topic: Fruit of the Spirit (3)

Text: But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, (Galatians 5:22, ESV)

After love we have joy.

Who wants to stay around someone with no joy! The joyless person is spiteful, bitter. And we are not supposed to be bitter.

The Bible says that if we allow bitterness to spring up, it will cause defilement, it will corrupt (Hebrews 12:15).

The bitterness you keep in you will rob you of your joy, it will not just damage you but many others will be affected. In the same vein, the joy you radiate makes you like a magnet. Bitterness is a strong repellent.

Nothing should happen to would rob you of your joy. But that will be is difficult if your joy is sourced from things external.

Our wrong perspective can distort external events in our minds making the negative look bigger than everything else, thereby robbing us of our joy.

When you fall into divers trial, you are told to count it all joy (James 1:2-4). That is not the natural reaction, it is the supernatural reaction as we are supernatural people.

Joy in the Holy Spirit is described as a sign of being in the kingdom of God (Romans 14:17); there is nothing like it.

And it is Jesus who has been anointed with the oil of joy above His fellows, because He loves righteousness and hates wickedness (Hebrews 1:7-8).

Loving righteousness and hating wickedness (being in sync with God), makes the fruit of joy to flourish.

That fruit is called the joy of the Lord, and it is derived from who God is, from the God who says that He sits in heaven and LAUGHS at the pretentious agitations of mortal men (Psalm 2:4).

Joy comes the fact that we are seated in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus (Ephesians 2:6). And the Bible says that in the presence of God there is fullness of joy and in his right hand there are pleasures forevermore (Psalm 16:11).

We need the eyes of our understanding to be opened to see from the heavenly perspective (Ephesians 1:18). It is clear that what you are “seeing” will determine if you will be joyful or not.

Get ready for a joy invasion. That is what it means for joy to be a fruit of the Spirit, the fruit of walking according to our new reality in Christ by His Spirit.

Action: pray that the eyes of your understanding be enlightened to see from the heavenly

Declaration: I am married to joy

Do not work for money

You don’t really understand the message of the kingdom if you don’t understand how to think about mammon.

Jesus said do not work for resources that perishes but for eternal rewards.

His words: “Do not labor for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For on him God the Father has set his seal.”

If you are a zealous foot soldier of Mammon, please you can stop reading at this point. Thank you.

Alright, for others, let’s go on. You need to look at those words of Jesus very well and make a personal decision about it: was he joking or was he serious?

I personally subscribe to the latter. So let’s ask another question, why do most people work?  They will say for money. And when they get the pay, it is for things that can decay, that can disappear.

So Jesus said one thing and we are all doing another thing.

But I ask again was Jesus joking?

He said: DO NOT labor for the food that perishes.

Alright. I know you will quote scriptures to me about the importance of work. But who said anything about work not being important.

The point here is the motivation for work. Remember Jesus was a carpenter, Paul did some tent making.

So let’s get into that.

Seven reasons to work

1. Self development

2. Platform for spiritual impact (not the religious rubbish in which you want to force people into an appearance grid.)

3. Training in team work

4. Service to others (society) (though that attracts cash)

5. Discipline training

6. Increase your capacity to love as you will have to interact, engage with people different from you on an ongoing basis

7. To express your gifts and calling and passion

A little note on number 4

We will give account for everything we do in the body for the purpose of reward.

So God will reward the fire fighter for fire fighting because in doing it for others, he did it for Jesus. (let that blow your mind away and reorient you about work.)

I am a journalist and at the end of time, Jesus will reward me for my service and skill that I deploy.

Some people think that they will only be rewarded for the spiritual things or for what they do in church. But how many hours do we spend in church? But the Bible says we will give account for everything we do in the flesh. (Everything is important). And we work for a lot of hours a week. We therefore need to get a kingdom understanding of work.

A little note on 7

If you are an entrepreneur, it is because God has put that in you. And you are fulfilled that your ideas are creating wealth for yourself and for others, solving the job problem of the society. And if you are a first class entrepreneur, you get to change the world of business. In partnership with God you are doing great things. And you may not even know God.

Conclusion

Understand that God could have sent you money in the bag in your room everyday to take care of your needs. He did it in the wilderness. So you work for the above reasons.

Does that mean you should not collect the money when paid for the work or we should not move up the financial ladder when the opportunity presents itself? Or we should not aggressively seek for financial increase or get financial education? Far from it.

But with the above reasons for working we will not be labouring for food that perishes, but will approach work with a different mindset. The money will just be incidental and will not define our identity.

Remember that for Adam, God gave work and it was not because he would starve otherwise. You can start work just for the money but along the line understand the ultimate vision of God for you to work.

For example: the one who works just for money will not do something extra at the place of work.

Let’s have a kingdom orientation for work.

Somebody can add that we work to be able to give. But God could give you the money to give. Ask the children of Israel, who in the wilderness gave for the tabernacle construction. They were divinely ‘dashed’ the things they give shortly before then in Egypt.

Somebody might say that Paul said he provided for his needs by working with his own hands.

But we know that he could have gotten what he needed through other means, and he only did that because he was careful not to put a stumbling block on his impact on the lives of the people, if he had demanded money from them.

So his ultimate reason was not just for the money.

Thanks

Day 6: 21 days to better relationships

Topic: Fruit of the Spirit (3)

Text: But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, (Galatians 5:22, ESV)

Still on the first item – love.

Love, like grease, makes relationship run without friction. People can hate you and you love them because you are enabled to do so by God, by his Spirit in you. And that disharms them.

They communicate hate to us, we communicate love to them. Paul said that is like putting coals of fire on their heads (Roman’s 12:19-21).

But to the limit that you have received love from God you can give (Matthew 10:8).

Jesus said that he who is forgiven much loves much (Luke 7:47). You have received mazing grace, give the same to other.

As you are connected by faith to God, you are connected to his fountain of love.

Peter, not understanding this possibility, asked: how many times would my brother offend me that I will have to forgive him (Matthew 18:21-22)? He thought 7 times would be stretching it, but Jesus said 70 times 7.

But if, somehow, you think God hoards his forgiveness, you will not be able to give the same.

So everything starts with a view of God, the same God who shed his love in our heart by the Holy Spirit he has given to us (Romans 5:5).

Perfect love casts out all fear (1John 4:18). And nothing distorts our vision of God and others like fear.

Adam and Eve got into a twisted fear of God based on the twisted vision/view of God and of themselves when they sinned (Genesis 3).

The sinful state is a twisted vision state, where up is down and down is up, where intentions are misunderstood and motives misread.

But the love-fruit of the Spirit brings a restoration of eye sight and we see others correctly. And we are moved to the realm of God where we believe all things, we stop being driven by suspicion, by fear.

We are secure in the love of God and that shows in our relationships, as we don’t derive our life from them. We are stable (secure in the love of God), therefore our relationships are stable as we release that love.

Action: In what does fear distort perception, contrary to love?

Declaration: I embrace the love of God; it controls me, and I communicate the same to others.
